He said no reason has been given for the unlawful occupation of the venue of the event, and “the APC Osun Chapter seriously condemns the closure of the democratic space against the people of State.”
Oyatomi added that more worrisome is the concealment of the identities of the supposed security agents some of whom wore masks and threatened to shoot those who had arrived early for the programme.

Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to reduce the level of hatred and bitterness among Nigerians, if the government was actually interested in resolving the problem of insurgency.
The governor, who made this known in an interview with Vanguard at the weekend in his office, also accused the President of running a government based on ethnic sentiment and religious bigotry.

He blamed bad leadership being experienced in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -led government for the reason behind the insecurity currently bedevilling the country, adding that the inability of the commander in chief to curb it was a display of Jonathan’s incompetence to rule the country.

“Now, they are just using propaganda. Look at the issue of the abduction of Chibok girls. The schoolgirls have been in captivity and they kept arguing — where are the names, who are they, where are the photographs; they didn’t believe that over 200 children were abducted. Haba! Even if it is 20 tortoise or goats! Won’t you look for them? One of the reasons I love this country is that we have people of integrity in all the regions, in all the states like my former colleague, former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili,” he said.

Kwankwaso, who acknowledged that the country was in a critical situation, noted that if insecurity is not halted, it would become the order of the day, where innocent people will be killed on a daily bases.

“What Nigeria requires now is a strong leadership that can effectively tackle the insurgency in the North-East, and other topical security challenges,” he said.

Kwankwaso suggested that one major way to restore normalcy in the northern part of the country was to draw out a Marshal Plan for the region, and urged President Jonathan to stamp his feet as the Commander –In-Chief of the Armed Forces, to tackle this security issue.

A suicide bomber, suspected to be a member of the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, early on Tuesday detonated an Impoverished Explosive Device at the popular Maiduguri Monday Market, killing no fewer than 17 persons.

Sixty-nine persons were reportedly injured in the attack.

Also in Ile-Ife, Osun State, a low-calibre bomb went off in the Onipetu area of the town around 4.00am but nobody was killed.

The Osun State police said they deactivated another bomb before it detonated.

“They were grenades of low calibre. The first one exploded and the other was defused. It happened in an isolated place, so it did not kill nor injure anybody. We have visited the scene and we are investigating the matter,” Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu, told newsmen.

Also in Kaduna, an explosion occurred around the Asikolaye/Bakin Ruwa area, along the Kaduna western bypass, late on Tuesday.

The casualty figure was not available as of the time of this report, witnesses however said many were killed and several injured.

The explosion reportedly shattered the glass windows of some of the surrounding buildings.

The Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency in Kaduna State, Halima Suleiman, confirmed the explosion to one of our correspondents on the telephone around 9.45pm.

The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Umar Shehu, confirmed the incident but said that the blast caused no death. He said only two people were injured.

Suleiman explained that the bomb was planted near a makeshift shop where provisions were sold but that it was unlikely that the casualty figure would be high since many people had gone for prayers at a nearby mosque

She said, “We don’t have any casualty figure at the moment but rescue operations are still on. Our officials on the ground said there were pieces of shattered windows. We learnt that a bomb was placed near a container shop that sells provisions.

“We were told it occurred when most people had gone to pray. I will inform you of any development later.”

The attack on the market in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, occurred at about 8.30am and was said to have affected mostly petty traders and members of the youth vigilante group, popularly called Civilian JTF, in the area.

Nine members of the vigilance group were said to have died in the attack.

When you are troubled sexually go and look for prostitutes”: Grace Mugabe

Grace Mugabe, wife of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been blasted for what critics say is the ‘promotion of prostitution’.

According to online reports, civil rights groups have accused the Zimbabwean first lady of indirectly encouraging sex trade in the country.

This comes after Grace Mugabe’s speech at a World Blood Donation Day function in Chinhoyi on Saturday.
Describing the rape of young children as "embarrassing" and "very bad", the first lady was also quoted as saying: “Baba vakataura wani kuti kana zvanetsa, munongotsvaka ma prostitutes”. (Didn’t the President say when you are troubled sexually go and look for prostitutes).

In addition to reportedly saying that men should buy sex from prostitutes rather than force themselves on innocent young girls, Mugabe also suggested the ‘death penalty’ for such crimes.

"Looking at men, I am saying while others are donating blood to improve life, some are destroying that life," she said.

"I think people who commit such heinous crimes should be immediately sent to the gallows…to be beheaded. I don't see the reason why we should consider anything else," bulawayo24.com quoted her saying.

About 486 Suspected Boko Haram Members Arrested in Abia State

There was heightened fear in parts of the South-East on Monday as news spread that hundreds of persons suspected to be Boko Haram members were arrested in Abia State.

The suspects, including eight women, were said to have been arrested along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway by soldiers attached to the 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Asa in the Ukwa West Local Government Area on Sunday.

Their arrest occurred some hours after security operatives detonated improvised explosive devices planted on the premises of a branch of the Living Faith World Bible Church (a.k.a. Winners Chapel) in Owerri, Imo State.

Before the Commander of the 144 Battalion, Lt. Col. Rasheed Omolori, announced the suspects’ arrest, the South-East governors vowed after paying a solidarity visit to President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja that they would not allow Boko Haram to attack the zone.

Omolori had told journalists at a news conference that his men intercepted a convoy of 33 buses conveying 486 suspected insurgents aged between 16 and 24 around 3am on Sunday.

The suspects, according to him, claimed to have come from different parts of the North in search of jobs.

He added that two of the 33 buses escaped with their occupants and that the incident had been reported to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The Abia State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Eze Chikamnayo, who was at the briefing alongside the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Charles Ajunwa, said the large number of vehicles conveying the suspects made the soldiers suspicious.

Wondering how such a long motorcade could not be intercepted by security personnel until it reached Abia State, Chikamnayo said it was also baffling that none of the suspects was able to identify the location they were heading for.

He however said that the Army and other security agencies in the state were working to uncover the actual mission of the suspects and those behind their movement.

The commissioner advised every state to work hand-in-hand with their security personnel to check insurgency in the country.

“Every security problem is local and if we handle it locally it will be nipped in the bud,” he said.

In Abuja, the South-East governors told State House correspondents that they were prepared to avert any plot by Boko Haram to attack the zone.

Governor Willy Obiano of Anambra State, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues said, “They (Boko Haram) can’t get there (South-East). I can assure you of that. We will not allow that to happen.
